Hummingbirds have always been one of my favorite creatures in this world. Bright and beautiful, these birds are the tiniest on the planet and can fly up to 30 miles per hour! It’s no wonder folks are flocking to get a hummingbird tattoo these days. With over 300 species that vary in beautifully bold colors, the artistic interpretations are endless.
Did you know a hummingbird can eat up to eight times its body weight in a day? Ah, to fly and eat copious amounts of food each and every day, isn’t that the dream? Maybe if I get a hummingbird tattoo, I’ll adopt some of their characteristics too…

Favorite Hummingbird Tattoo Ideas:
145. Music to my ears
With beautiful attention to detail, this small hummingbird tattoo is perfect and dainty as it flies behind the ear here. Did you know hummingbirds can actually hear better than humans? Such amazing little creatures!
44. Hummingbird tattoo along
Whoa, look at that treble clef! Ah, there’s a hummingbird flying above it! This is such a fun piece, from the use of colors to the huge pink flower and the musical notes. The bird appears to be heading for that flower and I imagine it’s humming some sort of tune as it goes along. Chirp, chirp, chirp. I’d sing all the way home and forever and always after getting a tattoo like this.
Limited Time Offer (click photo)
This tattoo is what dreams are made of! While this is largely a dreamcatcher piece, the hummingbird at the top is that one extra unique piece that makes this tattoo stand out among the rest. The line work is fantastically intricate and those feathers look soft enough to touch. Do you adore this dreamcatcher? Dreaming to see more? Sweet dreams folks, check out 66 others here.
42. Flying along the foot
This piece is simply beautiful. Each flower is a unique color as this design trails down the ankle over the foot, the hummingbird floating over the middle as it would in real life. I particularly like the smaller details here like the few fluttering leaves as well as the lines in the wings of the hummingbird. I would never want to wear shoes again for fear of obstructing this lovely work of art.
41. Whimsical back tattoo
I’m a huge fan of any whimsical design and this tattoo is magical. The floral swirls and colorful details make this piece stand out as an ode to one of the coolest birds in existence.
40. Expressive Hummingbird Tattoo
Wow, this tattoo is awesome and the placement works so well with this design! I love the unique, artistic take on the hummingbird in this particular piece. The sharp black lines contrast perfectly with the pastel colors used here. A playful take on the hummingbird as we know it, I’d happily show off this tattoo any chance I got.
39. Shoulder Swoop
This beautifully colored bird appears to be casually hanging out, dangling on this woman’s shoulder like, ‘oh hey, don’t mind me as I hum along here.’ I love it. I wonder if the lines curve over her shoulder at all making it visible from the front, but alas this angle pictured can’t cure my curiosity. Either way, this super cool tattoo wins a spot on my list for the unique placement and bold use of every color in the rainbow.
38. Tropical Design
The realistic flowers here seem to grab all of the attention until you realize there are two hummingbirds trying to drink sweet nectar from them! I love all of the fun colors at play here. If you’re loving the flowers even more than the birds in this piece, check out 88 other beautiful flower tattoos here.
37. Beautiful Ankle Design
Some may look at this tattoo as a flower piece with a hummingbird on the side, or a hummingbird piece with a flower on the side – either way I love the placement and choice of color here. Purple is such a royal color, representing wealth, wisdom and peace. It really goes beautifully with the green and pink hues in the hummingbird. And then that green stem? With the bits of blue around it? Stop the presses, this is too gorgeous. I’d wear shorts year round if I had this tattoo; it’s too pretty to hide!
36. Ballet Birds
I’m the least coordinated person I know and unfortunately will most likely never realize my dream of becoming a ballerina, but luckily there’s this beautiful tattoo I can admire and somehow that makes everything all better. But seriously, this tattoo is gorgeous. It works so perfectly on this person’s body, stretching upwards with those two hummingbirds fluttering around the ballerina. I love this tattoo in particular because this is exactly what I think of when I think of hummingbirds… Well, not the ballerina part, but the motion of them fluttering upwards in tandem, wings flapping so fast they create that signature ‘humming’ sound. I really adore this tattoo.
35. Watercolor Hummingbird Tattoo
Is this not one of the prettiest tattoos you’ve ever seen?! The bleeding colors are as radiant as a hummingbird in flight! Designed to look as though it’s flapping its wings like crazy, this piece of art embodies all that I love about these precious, flighty wonders of the world. I love that this whimsical hummingbird tattoo includes a flower as well, so there’s absolutely no doubt as to what bird this is.
34. Hummingbird Infinity Tattoo
OK, yes. Infinity tattoos may seem basic to some, but this hummingbird tattoo is precious! With sleek, bold black lines and the tiniest bit of color, this tattoo is BASICally a gem in my book. Love, love, love.
33. Swirly Twirly Hummingbird
So many curves and swirls and twirls in this all black hummingbird tattoo design! Super feminine and unique, it’s almost like the bird itself is morphing into a flower! Or vice versa! Either way, the size, tribal-like pattern and location all fuse together to earn this beautiful tattoo a spot on my list.
32. Realistic Design
Realistic, detailed and beautifully colored, this tattoo truly looks like a painting. A work of art, it literally looks like you could pet this hummingbird and it would flap it’s wings and fly backwards (which p.s. they are the only group of birds that can do so). With hues of green, blue and a touch of pink and yellow, the hummingbird tattoo on this woman’s leg is perfection.
31. Dainty Hummingbird Wrist Tattoo
Simple and sleek, this tattoo is one of my favorites. I love the wrist placement (I may be bias as I have a tattoo on my wrist as well…) and the use of black ink will ensure this beauty lasts for years to come. With the needle-like beak and wings in the air, this is a perfectly quaint hummingbird tattoo. Find more small tattoos here.
30. Colorful Hummingbird Back Tattoo
Is it just me or does this hummingbird look a bit dolphin-like? Right! That’s part of the reason I adore it. It’s whimsical, colorful and looks a bit like this hummingbird was sucking up more than just sugar water with that needle-like beak. Hummingbird tattoo on steroids! The wings kind of look like a butterfly too. So, I’m actually going to call this piece a ‘butterfly-phin-bird.’
29. Abstract Hummingbird
Another watercolor type interpretation of a hummingbird and flower, this tattoo is amazing. Taking up this persons forearm, a colorful blend blurs to create this work of art. I like that in this particular piece the bird isn’t depicted as drinking from the flower, rather it hovers above and appears to be looking at the viewer! Or perhaps it’s looking off into the far distance…because if you didn’t know, hummingbirds can see farther than humans.
28. A Hummingbird in Tribute
This beautiful gem is actually tattooed on someone you may have heard of. Zelda Williams, daughter of the late Robin Williams, got this tattoo as a tribute to her father. I really love the placement and the meaning behind this particular hummingbird tattoo. Always on the move, these wonderful creatures may come and go in the blink of an eye but as Zelda notes, “it’s not like they were never there, it just means that they’re not there anymore.” Excuse me, I need a tissue.
27. Rainbow Hummingbird
At first glance, it seems this is the same as #3, just in color – but it’s not! Indeed very similar though with a tribal feel and abstract interpretation of a bird in flight. I like this one for essentially the same reasons; it’s whimsical and truly a uniquely colorful take on a hummingbird tattoo.
26. Artistic Hummingbird
From the script words that I can’t quite make out to the bold use of color, this hummingbird tattoo looks like it was made by the strokes of magic markers. I love how much it looks like a painting where the artist decided to color outside of the lines. Unconventional, dramatic and a sight to be seen forever, this tattoo is visually appealing and beautifully unique.
25. Ankle Tattoo
This hummingbird tattoo appears to be taking flight with each step this person takes! The colors remind me of Autumn, while the turquoise adds an interesting pop to this piece. I love the particular placement of this bird, but I think this design would work beautifully on the back as well.
24. Tribal Hummingbird
I love a good tribal design and this hummingbird is wonderful! The line work, shapes and all black ink make this a tattoo that will sing for decades to come. P.s. if you’re loving the tribal designs as much as me, check out 100 of the best tribal tattoos here.
23. Hand Tattoo
Hey guys, hummingbirds aren’t just for girls! This dude chose to get one of these colorful creatures right in the center of his hand. Certainly a bold choice and a fun conversation piece for anyone who goes to shake this fella’s hand.
22. In Flight
Another colorful, artistic take on the hummingbird! Did you know hummingbirds have excellent vision? They can see every color we can, plus their eyes can process ultraviolet light, which means they can also see some colors we can’t. Luckily, I can see well enough to know that this tattoo is a lovely ode to these awesome little birds.
21. Fly Away With Me
I love, love, love this tattoo. This bird almost looks like a dove, but that needle-like beak is a giveaway that we’re looking at a dear hummingbird. This piece is so perfectly placed and just so darn pretty! I really love the floating feather details at the bottom too. Fun fact: hummingbirds pack more feathers per inch than any other bird (only exception could be the penguin, but that’s debatable). Though these feathers are bright and colorful in person, I like this all-black design just fine.
20. Free to Breathe
This hummingbird tattoo is a true work of art from the line details to the bold use of colors that appear to go in every direction. Birds are the ultimate symbols of freedom to some; free to take flight and get away at a moment’s notice, this tattoo is a reminder that we are all free to take a moment of peace to just live and breathe.
19. Iris Infused Hummingbird
Rather than depict a hummingbird drinking from a flower, this artist opted to give the bird itself a floral design which I find uniquely charming. The black base here makes the other colors pop all the more, giving this tattoo a life of its own.
18. Multicolor Bird
Perfectly pastel and beautifully designed, this hummingbird tattoo is really lovely. With its wings in the air, it appears to be in flight, but luckily this bird will be a permanent fixture on this person’s forearm. Aside from the colors and placement, what I find most striking about this particular tattoo is the hummingbird’s eye and beak. Detailed in black ink, both the eye and beak look quite realistic and bring the entire piece to life.
17. Flying High on the Upper Thigh
The placement of this tattoo is everything. I adore it! If hummingbirds aren’t your thing, check out some other sexy thigh tattoo designs here.
16. Sing me a Song
This sweet hummingbird design is a colorful addition to this person’s foot. I especially love the added touch of the little music notes in this tattoo. While their namesake humming emanates from their feathers, hummingbirds do indeed chirp and sing though their vocal cords are weaker than other birds. The flowers are simple, leaving all the attention towards the hummingbird itself.
15. A Dash of Yellow
Intricate line details and large wings make this hummingbird tattoo stand out from the rest. The dash of yellow in the flowers adds a pop, but also leaves me to wonder if the rest may be filled in with color in the future. It looks like a page out of an unfinished coloring book and I have an urge to take a marker to this tattoo and start coloring the rest! Hmm..maybe that was the intention? I think I’m on to something here. A ‘coloring book’ tattoo where I could take a marker to it and use a new color scheme every week! BRB, off to buy some non-toxic markers.
14. A Hummingbird’s Melody
A musical ode to hummingbirds, this arm tattoo speaks, err sings, volumes! The line details and artistic display with flowers emanating from the banjo are so perfect. I love the little bee and butterfly details as well. Black ink was a nice choice with this particular design as color may have taken away from the fine detail work going on here.
13. Singing the Blues
Simple, yet so different from the other tattoos on this list. I love the ombré coloring on this hummingbird tattoo along with the flower designs detailed in the body of the bird. Perhaps hummingbirds aren’t your favorite, but at this point you’re inspired to get a bird tattoo? Check out 90 astonishing bird tattoos here.
12. Smile, Isabelle
Is it just me or does this hummingbird appear to be smiling?! The line work on this tattoo is just lovely and the name dedication makes it personal and truly unique. A bit cartoon-like, this all-black tattoo makes me smile and I’m sure it’ll bring joy to this person forever!
11. Flying Upward
Another beautiful hummingbird back tattoo. The flowers almost look like pink hearts here which I love too. If your favorite part of this tattoo is the feather at the bottom, check out 35 awesome feather tattoos here.
10. Keys to my Heart
What is this hummingbird holding the keys to? My heart? Yes! The artist’s line work here makes it look as if this bird is literally in motion, taking these keys to unlock some secret garden where it can feast on any flower he or she could ever dream of. If you love these keys, check out 44 other ingenious key tattoos here.
9. Hummingbird of Hope
A hummingbird tattoo can represent an array of things for the person who decides to get one. In this case, the colorful bird is a symbol of hope and I love that. The word itself is beautifully done, with intricate detailing on the “H.” The colors of the hummingbird seem to blend into each other making for a tattoo to be admired for life.
8. Rainforest Hummingbird
Simply lovely, this hummingbird tattoo is perfectly placed and beautifully done. The colors remind me of the Amazon rainforest (not that I’ve been there, but don’t these colors just scream rainforest?!). I like how the tail end of the bird curves down and inward making the feathers look soft enough to touch.
7. Geometric Design
This tattoo is so super cool. Geometric-inspired, the bright colors here are what caught my eye immediately. I love the line work and touch of dots on both the bird and flower. Though most tattoos are designed in a way that the hummingbird is somehow interacting with the flower(s), these tattoos seem to work perfectly in tandem, clearly a set but not quite one tattoo. Did you notice the center of the flower is the same robin egg blue as the bird? Love that coordination!
6. Mosaic Inspired
The first thing I thought when I came across this tattoo was that it looked like the inner-workings of a watch…but much more colorful. I have no idea what the inside of a hummingbird looks like, but I like this artistic interpretation. It’s fun and whimsical and the placement works really well here (I’ve noticed this is quite a popular spot for a hummingbird tattoo). I believe this tattoo will stand the test of time.
5. Infinite Possibilities
Ah, another infinity tattoo. But I think we can all agree this one is super cool too, right? The line work is perfect and I love how the colors blend into each other seamlessly. A beautifully simple design, the infinity symbol remains a popular choice as its never ending loop signifies no limitations and infinite possibilities. As shown here, these symbols are super easy to customize and look good placed virtually anywhere on the body. Paired with a bird that represents joy and swiftness, this infinity symbol tattoo brings endless happiness.
4. Bright Shoulder Tattoo
Love how bright and welcoming this hummingbird tattoo is!
3. Matching Hummingbirds
How cute are these matching hummingbirds?! Thinking of getting a twin tattoo with your bestie but birds aren’t your thing? Check out these 88 other ideas here.
2. Two Birds Make A Flight
These birds are a bit rough around the edges, but that’s what makes this tattoo uniquely awesome. I’m not sure what they’re holding a string to…but in any case, I love the bold colors here.
1. Hummingbird Back Tattoo
I admit, I didn’t even see the hummingbird when I first caught a glimpse of this tattoo. Then I realized, the green leafy looking part at the top is indeed a bird! And that’s when I fell in love with this piece of art. Traveling up the spine with its bundle of flowers, petals dripping down the back, this piece is feminine and beautiful and everything a hummingbird tattoo should be.
