Allow Me To Declare My Love for MAC Patentpolish Lip Crayons

If you're on top of your beauty launches, then you might've already discovered what I think is MAC's best launch in a long time—the Patentpolish Lip Pencils. Somehow I missed the PR email about them a few months ago ('cuz I always be blogging), and it wasn't until I saw their glory on my friend Janine's lips that I started freaking out. At the time, we were on a press trip in NYC and I could not wait to get home and call them in.

* “Calling them in” is the beauty editor industry term for when you request samples from the PR person. I have product guilt and almost never do it, unless—like during instances like this—I just KNOW it's going to be something super-special.

Anyway, all of this is to say: after you read this blog post, you probably want to go find these quick! Because they're limited edition and won't be around for much longer. Sorry I didn't alert you sooner, but better late than never, right?

Now let's get into the nitty-gritty of why you would care when you probably have 1,000 chubby lip crayons already at home. For me, these stand out in terms of the colour choices, which are just a little bit elevated and unusual compared to your average drugstore lip crayon. They also give your lips a beautiful sheen that is not too glossy but just right. And of course, it goes without saying that the formula is beautifully balmy and moisturizing.

Does anyone care about the ingredients in MAC products? I guess y'all know what you're getting into here—nobody buys MAC expecting something natural.

Revved Up, Berry Bold and Teen Dream are the shade names I tested—so as you can see, one pink, one red and one orange.

Here's how they look out of the packaging. I have to say, there's something about the signature MAC black that makes you feel kind of awesome about yourself when you slick one of these on.

Now I'd like to draw your attention to the tips, which are rounded instead of pointy. Isn't that a gorgeous touch? They're also twist-up, so you never have to worry about sharpening.

And now for how they look on yours truly, who apparently needs to brush her hair more often…

Revved Up is a light peachy pink that I thought was interesting because it actually stays that way on your lips, instead of having your natural lip colour cancel it out. (Compare it with, say, the Rodial Glamsticks in Wet and Bang that I showed you yesterday, which let my lip colour show through.) So know that you're not going to get the usual sheerness here, although that doesn't mean it's heavy either. I also love Revved Up's soft sheen, which I think is the modern way to wear shine these days.

Teen Dream

Teen Dream is my favourite of the three; it's a mandarin orange with a hint of pink in it, and gives you a creamy (orange creamsicle?) effect. Hopefully that makes sense! I love this colour for a subtle hit of orange—but one that's not as strong as, say, the Lipstick Queen Jungle Queen that I praised not long ago. This would look great with bronzed skin and even some turquoise liner!

Berry Bold

Berry Bold is what you would expect from the name, a true berry red. This is an excellent option if you are in the market for a universal red in a sheer, lightweight formula—this would flatter anyone and feels easier to use than traditional red lipstick.

The Bottom Line

Since I'm more of a coral or pink girl in warm weather, I'm going with Teen Dream as my top pick here. That creamy orange is just a delight! But also check out the shade I saw on Janine, which was Go for Girlie, a yellow pink. Yes, yellow pink! (Head over to her blog to see what it looks like.) I also like Fearless, a Barbie-esque hot pink.

I repeat: you wanna act fast on this, as they're only around 'til stock runs out!
