How to Change Up Your Fine, Wavy, Brown Hair

Q: Hi! I am 24 years old and a textile designer. My hair is naturally dark brown, very fine and slightly wavy. Some days it is more wavy than others, and some days it is pretty straight. My hair has a mind of its own! Haha!

I've had many different hairstyles. Once, I dyed it bright red, and I had hot-pink highlights throughout college, so I'm not afraid to try something new. Right now, my hair feels so boring and has less volume than it used to.

When I'm not at work, I lean towards what I call a “grunge glam” style. I really want to find a hairstyle that looks great and can be appropriate for both my professional and personal life. I've also been thinking about getting the colour changed, but I can't decide what will look best on me. Any help would be greatly appreciated! — Sarah

A: Sarah, you have the most amazing cheeks… it would be great if you could blush them up, please!

A radical cut with your natural colour would be so effective and pretty.

You could keep your shine, which I always say is a woman's best friend. Everyone notices shine on hair; the reflective quality is an exquisite accessory.

This is a less committal option.

On the other end of the scale, colour would be a fantastic change for you. Here is a colour and cut that will address any extreme changes required.

First, the bang is not deep, but carefully thought out. The accompanying layers frame the eyes.

Using a wand to add extra movement would be worth the effort—to give you a wavy long hair identity.

This deeper colour, in the same style, would be equally pretty.

Again, blush up please…
