The Best Cuts That Require No Styling

Q: Hello, I love the site and really enjoy reading your excellent advice. I would love to hear your views. My top priority is to have hair that makes me look good (of course), but equally I look for minimum fuss. I want a style that I never have to style.

I hope the pictures can give you an idea of my texture and issues (including an odd-shaped Slavic face). I did not feel comfortable with the shorter hair shown here, but had a successful long front/short back bob around the time I was 18. I like to be able to tie it back and I dislike anything that looks too 'done' or fussy, including fancy curls. My style is mostly andro-minimalist.

I do not own a hairdryer, and go out with wet or naturally-dried hair, even in winter. My hair is an odd mix of fine hair that is prone to frizz and some volume/waves—when clean, it can go '80s if left un-conditioned. It is generally on the dry side, but quickly gets oily at the top, so I wash and condition each morning. I do not want to dye it at the moment, although would like to hear colour suggestions for when I will start having to again.

I just can't deal with the idea of having to style my hair right now so would welcome your ideas on how to make it look better while keeping it looking “natural.” Thanks! — Julia

A: Julia, as far as you wearing long hair, you are doing the best you can do.

Because of the texture and thickness, one length is the way to go. Layers would thin out your ends and make your hair too skinny.

This is my first option for having a stronger style that will work on its own with next to no styling:

This will also compliment your face shape:

Styled a little looser is also chic…

Then there is this short cut that would be super-fantastic on you as well:

I would not colour your hair at this point. This colour suits you so well. Colouring can add shine, but it is a short-term thing and you will be chasing it forever.

I think when you do venture into the colour world, keeping your hair dark will really show off your gorgeous skin, and will make your eyes pop.
